Balruddery Farm

Angus

A research farm on the lower slopes of the Sidlaw Hills, Balruddery Farm is located in Angus, 1¼ miles (2 km) west southwest of Fowlis and 5½ miles (9 km) west northwest of Dundee. The 118-ha (464-acre) arable farm was bought by the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) in 2008, with support from the Scottish Government. The farm comprises seventeen fields of sandy loam soil varying in size from 2 ha (5 acres) to 11 ha (27 acres), situated at between 70m (229 feet) and 160m (525 feet) above sea level. Balruddery provides SCRI with a means of exploring sustainable farming, sensitive to the environment, without the need for increasing use of fertilisers and chemical controls on pests and weeds, while supporting stable populations of animals, plants and insects.
