Linwood

Renfrewshire

An industrial town in Renfrewshire, Linwood lies on the Black Cart Water 2 miles (3 km) west of Paisley. Formerly a small hamlet, it developed initially in association with cotton milling in the 1790s when a planned village was laid out. Soap and paper were manufactured in the 19th century, but it was not until 1961 that the settlement expanded significantly with the opening of the Hillman car factory which employed 4,800 people at its peak. The factory closed in 1981 and the site was subsequently developed as the Phoenix Retail Park, Linwood becoming a dormitory village for Glasgow and Paisley. In 2011, the town was named the most dismal place in Scotland as part of the Carbuncle Awards.
