Western Isles

A location in the northwest of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Griminish (Gael: Griminis) lies next to Loch an Eilean, to the west of Vallay Sound, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) northeast of Balmartin. Griminish Point extends into the Atlantic, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the west northwest. Although most of the properties here lie in ruins, broadcaster and marine biologist Monty Halls spent six months in a restored thatched cottage, filmed as Monty Halls' Great Hebridean Escape for BBC television. Also located here is Callernish, an unusual round-house built in 1962 as the home of the island's laird, Granville Leveson-Gower (5th Earl Granville, 1918-96), to designs by Sir Martyn Beckett. This property was in a sorry state (2013).
