The small town of Newarthill is located 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Motherwell in North Lanarkshire Council Area. The Legbranock Burn flows to the north of the village while to the southwest lies the settlement of Carfin. Sir Robert McAlpine (1847 - 1934), known as Concrete Bob, was born in Newarthill.
