Newmains

North Lanarkshire

A small town in North Lanarkshire, Newmains lies between the Garrion Burn and the South Calder Water, 2 miles (3 km) east of Wishaw. The settlements of Cambusnethan and Bonkle lie respectively to the southwest and northeast. It developed in the 19th century in association with coal mining and ironworks. The nearby Chapel Colliery was closed in the early 1960s and a decade later Newmains was bypassed by the new A71 road. Modern industries include opencast coal mining, the manufacture of concrete products and a motor auction.
