Calderbank

North Lanarkshire

Located between Coatbridge and Chapelhall in North Lanarkshire Council Area, the village of Calderbank is separated from Chapelhall to the east by the North Calder Water. To the west of the village lie the remains of the Monklands Canal. Established as a company village to house workers in the iron and steel industry, the first purpose built steel works in Scotland was built in the village in 1887. During the 1930s, when reorganisation of the industry resulted in the closing of the steel works, much of the village was destroyed and replaced with more modern housing. Only the Church and several Main Street buildings remain from that period.
