Cleland

North Lanarkshire

A village of North Lanarkshire, Cleland lies 3 miles (5 km) east of Motherwell. The village is joined to the north by the settlement of Parkside, while to the east it is joined to Bellside. The modest Omoa Iron Works (named after a town in Honduras) was established here in the late 18th C. and operated until 1866 and, by the later 19th C., there were collieries operating nearby at Ravenshall and Sunnyside. The South Calder Water flows to the south of Cleland.
