Condorrat

North Lanarkshire

A suburb of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, Condorrat is located 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Cumbernauld town centre. Dating from the 17th C., Condorrat was a modest village with its own church and school by the 1860s. As new housing was developed here from 1973-77, the core of this village was incorporated within the New Town. This core still exists, with shops, a post-office, library, social club and war memorial. Facilities elsewhere in the district include a health centre, a community centre, three schools (Baird Memorial Primary, Condorrat Primary and St. Helen's Roman Catholic Primary), Our Lady and St. Helen Church and a football ground. Condorrat Ring Road divides terraced public housing and flats from semi-detached and detached private housing on the edge of the area. John Baird (1790 - 1820), the revolutionary and leader of the 1820 Radical Rising was born here.
