Greengairs

North Lanarkshire

A village of North Lanarkshire which developed in the 19th century in association with coal mining and quarrying, Greengairs mostly comprises public housing and lies 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Cumbernauld and a similar distance north northeast of Airdrie. The village of Wattston lies immediately to the west. From 1990, former open cast workings to the south were developed into one of the largest landfill sites in the UK. Methane drawn from the biodegradable content in the infill powers the 3.8 MW Greengairs power station, which opened in 1996.
