Morningside

North Lanarkshire

A small former industrial hamlet located near the southern boundary of North Lanarkshire, Morningside lies a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Newmains and 2½ miles (4 km) east of Wishaw. Coal mining and iron-making were major industries here, with the Torbush Iron Works once situated a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the northwest. This site has been redeveloped for housing and is also the location of the modern Morningside Primary School. Opencast coal mines are still in operation and the spoil from previous mining activities is much in evidence, although remediation efforts are ongoing. There was once two railways stations located here and a junction between branches of the Caledonian Railway and North British Railway. Morningside Farm remains to the east.
