A former kirkton village of North Lanarkshire, Muirhead lies in the west of the Council Area, 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of Coatbridge and a half-mile (1 km) south of Chryston, on the opposite side of the A80 dual-carriageway road. It developed in association with coal mining, brick making and distilling and is now a dormitory settlement for Cumbernauld and Glasgow. St. Barbara's Primary School is located in the village.
