Baile Tharbhach

Argyll and Bute

A significant abandoned village in N Central Islay (Argyll and Bute), Baile Tharbhach is situated a half-mile (1 km) west of Ballachlaven farm on the left bank of the Allt Ruadh. The footings of around twenty buildings remain. A John Darroch living here was prosecuted under the Excise Act of 1801 for illegal distilling, one of many on Islay. The settlement is surrounded by verdant fields which are now used for grazing, although there is evidence of rig-and-furrow cultivation. There is a massive standing stone in one of these fields just to the north, while there are extensive peat cuttings in Pairc Mor, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) beyond.
