A scattered settlement on the sheltered west coast of the island of Raasay in Highland Council Area, Clachan overlooks Churchton Bay ¾ mile (1.2 km) northwest of Inverarish. The ferry from Sconser on Skye docks at a pier here, located next to the site of an old battery built to defend the island during the Napoleonic Wars. Raasay House lies above and nearby on the roadside is its sizeable if somewhat decayed steading with its arched entrance and stumpy clock-tower above by the notable Highland architect Alexander Ross (1834 - 1925). Also located here are the 13th-century St. Moluag's chapel and churchyard, together with several archaeological relics. To the south is the Isle of Raasay Hotel, its core being a villa of 1877 also by Alexander Ross and now including a shop and tourist information point.
