A small linear crofting township in NE Sutherland (Highland Council Area), Upper Bighouse lies on the left bank of the Halladale River, 4 miles (6.5 km) south of Melvich. Immediately to the west lies Bighouse Hill, which rises to 145m (476 feet). The estate of Bighouse is centred at Bighouse Lodge, 5 miles (8 km) to the north, on Melvich Bay.
