A hamlet of Midlothian, lying 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Gorebridge. The 15th C. Borthwick Castle, which is now a hotel, was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87) shortly after her third marriage. Nearby is the Borthwick Parish Church, dating from the mid-19th C.
