Spittal

Highland

A small hamlet lying a half-mile (1 km) north of Mybster in the Caithness district of Highland Council Area. Spittal is located on the A9 trunk route, 9 miles (15 km) to the south of Thurso. Since the 19th C. there have been significant quarries at Spittal extracting Caithness flagstones of Devonian age. A museum which occupies the former school displays fossil plants and fish found in these quarries and others nearby.
