Tallant

Argyll and Bute

A locality with a farm in the centre of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Tallant is located 1½ miles (2.5 km) east southeast of Bowmore. A small distillery was established here by the Johnston brothers in 1821, taking advantage of the freedom to distill spirit given by the Small Stills Act of 1816. Despite producing up to 9500 litres (2100 gallons) of spirit annually, this enterprise seems to have struggled to make a profit, perhaps due to the brother's generosity in dispensing liquor to visitors and friends. Although distilling here stopped in 1852, the family found success with the Laphroaig Distillery on the south coast of the island. The Tallant Plantation lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the northeast, while Loch Tallant lies a half-mile (0.8 km) to the south. Confusingly, there is another Tallant farm located 8½ miles (14 km) to the southeast, where there is also another Loch Tallant.
