Octomore

(Ochdamhmòr)
Argyll and Bute

A locality comprising a farm and Octomore Hill in the E of the Rhinns of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Octomore, known locally as 'big brae', is situated a quarter-mile (0.4 km) northwest of Port Charlotte. The name derives from an old measure of area, the octave was an eighth of a davoch, and thus Octomore (Gael: Ochdamhmòr) means 'big eighth'. Between 1817 and 1840 there was a small single-still distillery here but, today, it gives its name to a particularly peaty whisky produced by the nearby Bruichladdich Distillery.
