A village on the north coast of Caithness, Mey lies 6 miles (9 km) west of John o' Groats and a half-mile (1 km) southeast of the Loch of Mey. From the 1850s local flagstone was exported from its pier. The Castle of Mey, a former home of the earls of Caithness and of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (1901 - 2002), lies a mile (1.5 km) to the northeast overlooking Mey Bay, an inlet of the Pentland Firth.
