Morar

Highland

A small village in the Morar district of Lochaber in SW Highland Council Area, Morar lies 2 miles (3 km) south of Mallaig on an isthmus between the western end of Loch Morar and Morar Bay. It developed following the opening of the West Highland Railway in 1901 and from the late 1940s in association with the generation of hydro-electricity, tourism and boat-building. The Punch cartoonist Cyril Kenneth Bird (better known as Fougasse, 1887 - 1965) lived at Morar Lodge, while the English composer Sir Arnold Bax (1883 - 1953) visited regularly in the 1930s, staying at the Station Hotel. A nearby beach formed a location for a scene in the film Local Hero (1983).
