A scattered settlement in SW Perth and Kinross, Feddal lies to the north of the Allan Water, a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Braco. Houses have grown up in association with farms at West Feddal, Middle (or Mid) Feddal and East Feddal, and around the entrance to the former Feddal Castle. Feddal Castle was a remarkable construction, dating from 1683, it was remodelled c.1900 as a Disney-esque Gothic Revival mansion, destroyed by fire in 1929 and finally demolished in 1953. This last house was white-harled and featured an enormous bow front, large square castellated tower and corner turrets with alternately conical slated and high-domed roofs. A ruined gatehouse and arched gateway remain and the glasshouses, once described as the finest in the country, are also ruined.
The estate and old house were the property of the Burden family until 1879. Rob Roy MacGregor (1671 - 1734) was a friend of the Laird of Feddal, coming here regularly to play cards, while Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-88) is said to have stayed in 1745. The new castle was built as a country home for George Boyd Thornton, a successful rubber goods manufacturer in Edinburgh. Its last owner was Major George Falconer Stewart, who bought the house and sporting estate in 1922.
