Hamar

Shetland

A small settlement on the northern shore of Balta Sound on the east coast of the island of Unst in Shetland, Hamar is located ¾ mile (1.2 km) west of Swinna Ness. There was once a herring station here, at its peak between 1901-06 when Balta Sound was one of Europe's largest centres for this industry. A Viking longhouse, described as Scotland's best preserved example, was excavated here in 2005-10.
