Saligo

Argyll and Bute

A location in the W of the Rhinns of Islay, Argyll and Bute, Saligo lies behind Saligo Bay, 2 miles (3 km) north of Kilchoman and 5½ miles (9 km) north northwest of Port Charlotte. The Saligo River connects Loch Gorm to the east with Saligo Bay. A traditional longhouse is still occupied by the roadside, while military bunkers in the fields to the northeast were part of a Chain Home Radar station operated by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Later a mast which formed part of a RACAL radio-based navigation system was installed here, but this was decommissioned in the 1990s after the advent of the Global Positioning System (GPS) using satellites.
