Corncockle is a locality in E Dumfries and Galloway, located a quarter-mile (0.4 km) north of Templand and 2½ miles (4 km) north of Lochmaben. There is a farm here and Corncockle Plantation, to the east, partially covers the site of a significant quarry that once supplied red sandstone to construct the buildings of Central Scotland and which was also shipped around the globe. Most notably the stone was used in the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh, and much later the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre in Glasgow and Louis Vuitton Shops throughout the world. The quarry was established in the 19th C., reaching its peak in the 1890s and still worked until the 1990s. It was within these Permian-age rocks that dinosaur footprints were uncovered in 1824 and, through the enthusiasm of Rev. Dr. Henry Duncan (1774 - 1846), these became the first in the world to be described scientifically. Sir William Jardine (1800-74) wrote of them in his Ichnology of Annandale, or Illustrations of Footmarks Impressed on the New Red Sandstone of Corncockle Muir (1853).
