A suburb and former estate located in E Glasgow, with Baillieston to its east and Shettleston to the west, Mount Vernon was originally named Windy Edge because of its position on a high and commanding ridge. It was purchased by Glasgow tobacco merchant, George Buchanan, in 1758 and renamed Mount Vernon after his neighbouring estate in Virginia, owned by George Washington. A century later (1860-78) more villas were built and a suburban rail line established. By the 1930s these house were engulfed with newer housing, the predominate feature in Mount Vernon.
