Blackquarter

Dumfries and Galloway

A farm now surrounded by the Blackquarter Forest of NW Dumfries and Galloway, Blackquarter is situated a half-mile (0.8 km) southeast of Loch Eldrig and 3 miles (5 km) west northwest of Newton Stewart. The Blackquarter Forest is a section of the Penninghame Forest and was planted in the later 20th C on the Blackquarter Moss. A massive concrete direction arrow lies in a fields to the southwest of the farm buildings. This was installed during the Second World War to direct aeroplanes towards the bombing range which lay to the south. An observers' tower lies nearby, which would report the accuracy of the bombing. The building of these facilities ensured the farm gained a telephone line when most had none.
