Gateside

Dumfries and Galloway

A small collier settlement and a farm in Dumfries and Galloway, Gateside is located 1½ miles (2.5 km) northwest of Sanquhar and 2 miles (3 km) east southeast of Kirkconnel. Gateside Colliery was sunk in 1891, employed up to 410 people and closed in 1964. It comprised two shafts, each 102m (335 feet) deep. A fireworks factory was established here in the mid-1970s to replace these jobs, this became a modest manufacturer of commercial explosives from 1988. A number of buildings remain on both sides of the A76 Trunk Road, with a coal bing to the north.
