Banknock

(Hollandbush)
Falkirk

A village in the W of Falkirk Council area, situated on the Bonny Water to the west of the M80 Motorway and north of the Forth and Clyde Canal. Settlement began as the village of Hollandbush and this name persisted until the early 20th century. The village grew markedly in size with the building of housing the southeast in the years after the Second World War. Bankier Primary School opened on the site of the former Bankier House in 1965. Further housing was developed in the 1970s but the original village of Hollandbush strung out along the A803 road is now gone. There is a community hall and a few shops.

This was an area of coal mining, with the Coneypark Colliery to the west and the Banknock Colliery to the north. The Bankier Distillery operated on its western edge between 1828 and 1928, but was finally demolished in the 1980s. Banknock Station opened on the Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway in 1888 and closed with this line in 1935.
