Dumfries and Galloway

A village of Dumfries and Galloway, Torthorwald (pronounced 'tor-thor-all') lies to the east of the Lochar Water, midway between Lochmaben and Dumfries. Buildings of interest include the parish church (1782), a recently restored cruck-framed cottage with a thatched roof and the ruins of a castle that was a stronghold of the Kirkpatrick and Carlyle families.
