Pibble

Dumfries and Galloway

A location and hill-farm in S Dumfries and Galloway, Pibble lies 2¾ miles (4.5 km) east northeast of Creetown. The remains of a mine can be seen on the northwestern slopes of Pibble Hill. This extracted lead, copper and silver possibly as early as the 18th C. but certainly between 1849 and 1855, making use of three shafts at different levels on the hillside. It was operated by the Creetown Copper and Lead Mining Company and employed thirty-six men, nine boys and three women. The mine exploits a vein injected into the Silurian greywacke rocks by the granite intrusion represented by Cairnsmore of Fleet. The remains of the mine complex represent a Scheduled Ancient Monument and include base of a washing and dressing plant, a pit which once contained a water-wheel used to power pumps, an associated little reservoir and the remains of an engine house which once contained a steam-powered Cornish beam-engine.
