Baltersan

Dumfries and Galloway

A location in Dumfries and Galloway, Baltersan lies 2½ miles (4 km) south southeast of Newton Stewart. Located here is one of the first concrete grain silos to be built in Scotland. Although now disused the silo has a distinctive battlemented crown and is 30.5m (100 feet) high and 4.26m (14 feet) in diameter. Dating from 1920, the structure was built by an Aberdeen-based contractor and the 1.8-m (6-foot) thick walls were laid down in 0.6-m (2-foot) sections.
