Mile Markers, Smailholm

A village in the Roxburgh district of the Scottish Borders, Smailholm lies 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of Kelso. To the southwest stands Smailholm Tower, a former stronghold of the Pringle family built in the 15th century. Repeatedly attacked by the English in the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle later passed to the Scott family. Sir Walter Scott spent part of his childhood at nearby Sandyknowe Farm.
