Hamarsness

(Hamars Ness)

A location on the north coast of Fetlar in Shetland, Hamarsness lies to the east of the headland of Hamars Ness and 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of Houbie. Taking its name from a nearby ruined croft, this is now the location of Fetlar's roll-on-roll-off ferry terminal, with links to Belmont on Unst and Gutcher on Yell, replacing an earlier terminal at Oddsta in 2004. The new terminal required a road extension. A breakwater and pier were added in 2011 at a cost of £2.65 million. This provided the island's first substantial pier and berth for small craft, including fishing boats. The breakwater also improved conditions for docking the ferry and now allows it to remain berthed at Fetlar overnight in bad weather.
