Lower Voe

A settlement at the head of Olna Firth on the NW coast of the Shetland Mainland which is part of a larger community known as Voe. It is accessed by the B9071 road which descends steeply from the A970 and is separated from the larger settlement of Hillside, located to the northeast, by a runoff stream from the Loch of Voe to the east. The pier here was built as part of a herring station in the 19th C. but is now associated with a small marina. The Olna Whaling Company, owned by Leith-based Christian Salvesen & Company, also operated from here from 1904 to 1929.
