Sodom

A location on the island of Whalsay (Shetland), Sodom (from the Old Norse suðr-heimr, meaning 'southerly homestead') is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east of Symbister. Hugh MacDiarmid (1892 -1978) lived in a croft-house here during the 1930s, where he is said to have written some of his finest poems. His house is now a camping böd, run by Shetland Amenity Trust. Sodom Quarry lies opposite.
