Cruester

A location on the west coast of Bressay in Shetland, Cruester lies a half-mile (1 km) northwest of the ferry terminal at Maryfield. There was once a fishing station here and the ruined Old Haa remains. There are substantial remnants of a Second World War gun emplacement and associated accommodation camp on the southern slopes of the Hill of Cruester, while the Holm of Cruester is a rock lying 200m (650 feet) offshore, within the Bressay Sound. There was a Bronze-Age burnt mound lying close to the shore, but this was excavated in 2000 and removed to the Bressay Heritage Centre in 2008 to protect it from further erosion.
