Loans of Rarichie

A flat-lying location between Shandwick and Fearn in Easter Ross, Loans of Rarichie represents part of the site of the former Fearn Airfield, commissioned as a Fleet Air Arm training base in 1942 and known as HMS Owl. It was in this area that the three runways were built. Despite occasional use of one by light aircraft, most of the airfield has been ploughed up and restored to agricultural use. Many of the former military buildings remain, including the C-listed former airfield control tower which was bought by a London couple in 2012 for conversion to a private house. This featured in the Channel 4 television programme Restoration Man in 2015. Some other military buildings have been reused including those comprising the Fearn Drome Industrial Estate.
