A rural location lying a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east of Mayfield and ¾ mile (1.2 km west of Edgehead in Midlothian. D'Arcy House is modest traditional stone-built Victorian farmhouse situated in an elevated position. It is set in 2.8 ha (7 acres) of grounds and offers panoramic views towards Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. Behind is D'Arcy Wood and there was once a quarry here. D'Arcy is notable because it lies on the crest of a Carboniferous anticline, and a well was drilled here 1919-22 to prospect for oil in the Binny, Hailes and Granton sandstones. The well encountered gas at 221m (724 feet) and oil at approximately 552m (1810 feet). Further exploration followed between here and Cousland in the 1930s and the Midlothian Oil Field produced modest amounts of commercial oil and gas until 1964.
