Coillabus

A small scattered settlement on the Oa peninsula in the S of island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, Coillabus is situated 3 miles (5 km) west southwest of Port Ellen. The settlement is formed of two parts; Coillabus and Lower Coillabus, and the name includes the distinctly Norse suffix 'bus' meaning farm or homestead. There is evidence of abandoned cottages from the 19th C. but the Old Manse (which served the now-ruined Oa Parish Church at Risabus) survives, while modern houses were built here in the early 21st C.
