Glenmachrie Lots

A small group of agricultural holdings, each comprising a house, barn and modest area of land, Glenmachrie Lots lie to the south of Glen Machrie, a mile (1.8 km) southeast of Islay Airport at Glenegedale and 3¾ miles (6 km) north northwest of Port Ellen. These holdings were established in the late 1820s by clearing peat from moorland to provide enough land to grow potatoes and enough grass for a cow, thus feeding part-time or non-agricultural workers and their families, some displaced from townships elsewhere. There are similar settlements nearby; the nearest being Glenegedalemoor Lots, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north northeast.
