Airigh Ghuaidhre

An abandoned township in E Central Islay, Airigh Ghuaidhre lies a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Loch Bharradail and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) south of Ballygrant. The footings of nine longhouses, two subsidiary buildings and limekilns, together with walled enclosures. A John Darrach living here was prosecuted under the Excise Act of 1801 for illegal distilling, one of many on Islay, but the settlement was empty by the mid-19th C. and is not shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1881. An archaeological survey was undertaken here by the University of Reading in 2011. There are disused lead workings a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north.
