Mulindry

Argyll and Bute

Mulindry is a location drawn out along the River Laggan in the centre of the island Islay in Argyll and Bute. In the west is Mulindry Plantation and Mulindry Farm, which is let by the Islay Estate. To the east the Mulindry Bridge crosses the Laggan, and the whitewashed Mulindry School is now converted to domestic use. Between are abandoned buildings which include the remains of a short-lived whisky distillery which opened in 1826. Its machinery was powered by the river and its annual output reached around 20,000 litres (4400 gallons) of spirit. However, the owner John Sinclair is said to have liked his own product a little too much and the distillery was bankrupt by the early 1830s.
