Portavadie

Argyll and Bute

A settlement on the Cowal peninsula, Portavadie lies on the east shore of Loch Fyne, 4 miles (6.5 km) southwest of Tighnabruaich. During the 1970s a controversial and short-lived oil rig construction yard was built here, taking advantage of the deep water offshore. This facility, which included an immense dry-dock, was built with government money but never used as the concrete platforms it was intended to produce fell out of favour. The site has been redeveloped as a 230-berth marina, opening in 2009. A ferry across the loch links the village with Tarbet on the Kintyre peninsula.
