Glenderby

(Glen Derby)
Perth and Kinross

A woodland settlement in Perth and Kinross, Glenderby (sometimes Glen Derby) lies to the west of Balnald, a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Kirkmichael. The settlement was built on bare moorland between 1968 and 1979 and includes a log-cabin hotel and twenty-one substantial houses located to the west, all with distinctive turfed roofs. These were built as holiday homes but several are now permanently-occupied and the settlement benefits from a strong residents' association. Notable residents have included film director Charles Crichton (1910-99), known for his Ealing Comedies and A Fish Called Wanda (1988), and mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah (b. 1929).
