Kingarth

Argyll and Bute

A small hamlet in a parish of the same name, at the southern end of the island of Bute, Argyll and Bute, Kingarth overlooks Kilchattan Bay, 8 miles (12 km) to the south of Rothesay and 3 miles (5 km) north of Garroch Head. Located here are a hotel, war memorial and a large cemetery, the latter on the site of the former Kingarth Parish Church, or Mid Kirk, which was destroyed by a storm c.1795. Its replacement, built by William Burn in 1826 was badly damaged by another storm in 1968 and subsequently demolished. A tile-works continued in production until 1915 and the school here is now closed. The Baird Airstrip lies a half-mile (0.8 km) to the southwest.
