Papil

Shetland

A settlement at the southern end of the island of West Burra which lies to the west of the south Mainland of Shetland. The ruined St Laurence's Church at Papil stands on the site of an earlier church which may have been the principal church of south Shetland in pre-Norse times. Several fine examples of Pictish sculptured stones have been found in the churchyard, including the 'Papil Stone', the side slab of an altar depicting a procession of monks.
