Bellabeg

Aberdeenshire

A small roadside settlement in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Bellabeg lies on the north side of the River Don opposite the village of Strathdon. The Lonach Highland Gathering and Games is held annually in the Bellabeg Park on the fourth Saturday in August. On the day of the Gathering the Men of Lonach in full Highland dress and carrying pikes and Lochaber battle-axes march to the Bellabeg Park visiting the homes of the Patrons of the Gathering en route. The event concludes in the evening with the Lonach Highland Ball. The Games grew in stature after they were patronised by comedian Billy Connolly, who once lived nearby, and his notable house-guests were also involved; with actors Robin Williams and Aidan Quinn having participated in the associated hill race on several occasions, while comedian Steve Martin and actor Sean Connery were amongst the spectators.
