A large commuter village in east Aberdeenshire, Newtonhill lies on the North Sea coast, 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Stonehaven and 10 miles (16 km) south of Aberdeen. Newtonhill lies on the East Coast Main Line railway and once had a station which opened with the line in 1851 but closed in 1956.
