A small hamlet in an Angus parish of the same name, Farnell lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Brechin. Its Gothic church dates from 1806 and nearby Farnell Castle, a residence of the bishops of Brechin built in the 16th Century, is said to stand on the site of an earlier building visited by King Edward I of England in 1296. The castle remained a property of the bishops until 1566 and eventually fell into the hands of the Carnegie family. To the north, within Kinnaird Deer Park, is Kinnaird Castle, the ancestral home of the Carnegie earls of Southesk since the early 15th century.
