A commuter settlement on the southern outskirts of Glasgow, Clarkston lies 5 miles (8 km) south of Glasgow city centre and 6 miles (9.5 km) southeast of Paisley in East Renfrewshire. The town benefits from a library, community hall, two primary schools (Carolside and St. Joseph's), a fire station, several churches and Clarkston Railway Station, which opened 1866. Shops are centred on Busby Road, with others to the south on Eaglesham Road, serving Sheddens. Located between Clarkston and nearby Newton Mearns is the National Trust property of Greenbank Gardens.
